Building studied : Tollcross Winter Gardens
Architect: David Bryce and William Burn
Completed: 1848 (Refurbished 2023)
The design for this garment takes inspiration from the white steel frame of the Tollcross Winter Gardens. Striped Silk organza and sheer panels have been combined to create intersecting geometric patterns and to communicate a feeling of lightness such as one feels when in a glasshouse. The front edge of the garment takes its shape from the silhouette of the Winter Gardens, and this shape is rotated and reused throughout the piece. Cornflowers, grown from seed in Bridgeton, emerge from the back panel and harmonise with the sky-blue of the garment beneath.
